Ferry to Samothraki

Alexandroupoli – Samothraki

Samothraki is connected daily from Alexandroupolis to the port of Kamariotissa, located in the north-western part of the island and vice-versa. This ferry is the only connection to Greece’s mainland. The trip duration is of 1h50mins.

From June to September, there are more daily trips scheduled. We do advise to purchase your tickets and boarding cards well in advance.

You can buy your ferry tickets from the office in the port of Samothraki or Alexandroupolis. However, we advise you to book your tickets in advance online to ensure that they do not run out.

Samothraki – Liemnos – Lavrio

From June to September, Samothraki is connected three times a week with Liemnos Island. The ferry departs from Alexandroupolis stops at Samothraki and embarks then to Liemnos.
The duration of this trip is of 2h50mins.

From Liemnos, there are connections to Lavrio, a city on the mainland of Attica. Lavrio is 1 hour drive from Athens and its International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”.

Other islands of the North Aegean

Except for Limnos during the summer period, there is no direct ferry connection from Samothraki to any other island in the Aegean Sea. You can reach the nearby island of Thasos from Kavala (a city in the mainland of Northern Greece).

Once you land in Kamariotissa harbour, you can continue your journey with your own car, but also renting a car, a scooter or using local buses.

Getting to Samothraki by car

If you are travelling from Greece or from its neighbor countries, such as Italy (via Igoumenitsa port), Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey or Serbia, the easiest way to get to Samothraki Island is by car.

Alexandropoulis is easily accessible as it is located on “Egnatia Odos”, also known as the Egnatia Highway. This is a major modern road infrastructure that spans Greece from its western border with Italy and Albania to its eastern border with Turkey.

Please note that the highway is a tolled road, and users are required to pay tolls at various points along the route.

If you do not travel with your own car, you may want to rent-a-car in Thessaloniki or Alexandroupolis.

You may then transfer your vehicle from Alexandroundroupolis to Samothraki by ferry. It is strongly recommended to book the ferry tickets well in advance, especially during the peak season.

Flights to Samothraki

You may reach Samothraki by aircraft using the following options:

      • Alexandroupolis Airport “Dimokritos” (AXD) daily throughout the year.
      • During the summer period, Limnos Airport “Hephaestus” (LXS).
      • Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH) which is the largest and busiest airport in Greece, serving as the primary international gateway to Greece.
      • Thessaloniki International Airport “Makedonia” (SKG): The second-largest airport in Greece, serving the northern part of the country.

From Athens and Thessaloniki airports you may also rent-a-car. Reach Alexandroupolis in around 8 hours of drive from Athens and 3 ½ hours from Thessaloniki. In both cases, the highways are excellent (with frequent tolls).

Getting to Samothraki by bus

If you land in Thessaloniki International Airport, a convenient option to reach Alexandroupolis would be to take the public bus (KTEL). Buses between the two cities run frequently. The distance is of about 300kms, roughly 4,5 hours.

No matter which transport mode you choose, we encourage you to opt for the most sustainable one, once you disembark in Samothraki. We strongly recommend getting straight to your accommodation. Relax and get familiar with the topography of the Island of Great Gods.
